MIAMI – While no longer in the running for the Catholic Church’s top job, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has been actively following the drama and excitement of the 267th Papal election from his off-season home in Miami, with close high-school classmates Kevin Nichols and Darren Jackson.
Reached for comment by phone Tuesday evening, the former Pontiff was of mixed emotions, but clearly enjoying the current conclave from the sidelines. “Sure I miss it,” said Benedict, between bites of a Taco Bell Doritos® Locos Taco. “But you know, everyone’s time comes to step aside, and right now, I’m just taking it all in as a fan.”
And regarding the question on everyone’s mind? “Haha, am I rooting for any one cardinal?” chuckled the former leader of the planet’s 1.18 billion Catholics. “I may have someone in mind, but in general I just hope it’s a great conclave.”
Benedict XVI has no formal events scheduled until Thursday, when he is to appear at the opening of a Denver area wave pool.
